Welcome to Youth Fencing at the A. C. Lewis YMCA
Students of the A. C. Lewis YMCA Youth Fencing program participated in their first tournament at Christ Episcopal School in Covington, LA. Twenty-one fencers from Louisiana and Texas competed. Ten from the YMCA program competed in the mixed youth foil event that was open to boys and girls ages 15 and younger. For a first-time showing at a regional event, the YMCA fencers competed well, and served as gracious ambassadors of the Baton Rouge area YMCAs. Several fencers earned medals in their age categories.
Fencing is one of only four sports to be included in every modern Olympic Games. The A. C. Lewis YMCA Youth Fencing program provides a challenging athletic atmosphere in a physically and emotionally safe environment. We are not just teaching fencing. We are teaching sportsmanship, respect, caring, problem solving, stress management, the development of intuition and self esteem. We encourage our students to achieve the highest level of success that they desire.
The A. C. Lewis YMCA Youth Fencing program was started in Fall 2008 by USFCA certified coach Marge Collier and supported with the assistance of branch Wellness Director, Donna Chustz. The youth fencing program currently has seventeen students in the beginner and advanced classes.
August 23 at 4 pm we will host an open-house for parents and children to learn what the sport of fencing is about. Coach Marge and assistant coach David will be on hand to answer your questions about fencing, the youth program or enrolling your child in the Fall 2010 session. Classes will be held on Mondays at the A.C. Lewis YMCA with the beginner’s class at 5 pm and intermediate and advanced at 4 pm.
